Scam alert re: your house! Please read; you could be at risk
Hi Neighbors!
It's spring and the robins are back, the flora is blooming--- and scammers have a new way to steal from you.
I just received the following from a friend who lives and owns in Riverhead:
Fradulent transfer of your property without you knowing
My son-in-law accidentally found my property for sale on Zillow and I didn't authorize it! It could have been sold out from under me.
After lots of phone calls, to the local police, state police, DA's office, I found out there isn't much that can be done until after the title has changed.
Then you have to hire attorneys and fight to get it back.
According to the DA, it's happening A LOT!
If you have a mortgage, there is less to worry about. If there is no mortgage, there's a lot to worry about.
What to do: monitor MLS (Multiple Listing Service), Zillow.com, Realtor.com and any other real estate website. The most important is
MLS, as the others download to their websites.
Create an account on Zillow: Log into Zillow.com. Enter your address in the upper right corner. Click on the three dots, then click on: "claim ownership". Fill in your information and submit. At the bottom of the screen, you should then see a message "claimed ownership".
I did this on Zillow. Before I claimed ownership, it said "ownership not claimed", which meant that we were safe, for the moment. Hopefully, by claiming ownership,
it is a deterrent to the scammers claiming ownership of our property.
Please pass this information along to everyone. We unfortunately live in an age of people without a conscience.
