Mike's North Fork Moment of the Month
Some of the most beautiful moments in Northville Beach are in Winter. Of course there’s much to love in Spring, Summer, and Fall but when the deep freeze sets in there’s an entirely different kind of appeal. In twenty years of living near the Sound I’ve seen it freeze over (for the first hundred yards or so), watched sea smoke rise from it, and have walked through knee-deep snow drifts along the shore. Perhaps most thrilling of all was standing in 30 mile-an-hour winds next to an Iron Pier dripping with icicles as waves crashed against it (while running back to the car every few minutes to defrost!).
I’ve shot variations on this scene several times over the years. “Icicle Pier”, taken in 2011, may be my favorite because it shows the “old” iron pier, a huge wave caught mid-crash, and a tanker in the background adding to the sense of place.
