Who:
• Louise Harrison, Long Island Natural Areas Manager with Save the Sound, will share how residents can participate in the an environmental review process, using Strong’s Marine project as a live example.
• Anne Sherwood Pundyk and Stephen Boscola, of Save Mattituck Inlet, will discuss the project and related concerns.
The case:
Strong’s Marine is proposing building two football field-sized yacht-storage buildings totaling more than 100,000square feet on Mattituck Inlet; both buildings will be taller than five stories. The project will cut down over 630 mature trees on 4 acres adjacent to Mill Road Preserveand excavate 134,000 cubic yards to take elevation from 50’ to 10’.
Why this matters to the whole North Fork:
• Mattituck Inlet is a regional resource. It’s the only navigable waterway east of Mt. Sinai on LI Sound coast
• Increased regional traffic. There will be a minimum of 80 haul trucks a day, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week — amounting one every 7 minutes — stretching from Mattituck to the LIE for at least 6 months
• There is an adjacent public space, the Mill Road Nature Preserve, that will be impacted
• Environmental consequences are not confined to Mattituck
• Lowering a coastal elevation during unprecedented sea level rise will impact the region’s climate resiliency
• The project would set a precedent for large-scale development in the region
The project is currently under Environmental Review by the Southold Town Planning Board, with a public hearing scheduled for May 15, 6 p.m., at Southold Town Hall 53095 Route 25. PO Box 1179. Southold, NY 11971 631-765-1800.
